Sudden Cardiac Death

For those who are not aware of SCD, you will also find that it is called sudden cardiac arrest. This is where the heart will suddenly stop without any warning or without any cause. You will find that it could be the result of irregular heart beat, but it could also be from past and current strains (like drug use) that make the heart physically tired and just stop. You will want to make sure that you think about things like SCD so that you can rethink your current drug use or even alcohol abuse. It is estimated that there are as many as 7,000 unexplainable heart failures that happen each year and it is rising with youth. Perhaps it is something natural like a hole in the heart that was never picked up on, but you may find that it is drug related. This is why it is very important that you talk to your child about the use of drug use and how it affects the heart.

This type of heart dysfunction will occur mostly with those who are 10-19 years old. It will also affect boys more than girls, however, so does drug use. Drug use not only is for those who are getting high at parties, but for those teens who want to make it to the big leagues and use such drugs as speed to enhance performance or practice. Keep in mind that young people are unaware of their bodies. They don't know what is right and what feels wrong. They don't tell adults because they fear getting in trouble, but even through fear, you have to be able to get the children to come to you, as a parent, so that you can truly protect your child.

Keep in mind that a child is its own worst enemy and life in school has changed. You have children dealing with death, with depression, with puberty, with change, and they need to turn to something other than a friend or mom. You will find that the signs for SCD are:

* Racing heartbeat
* Fainting
* Seizures
* Dizziness
* Chest pain
* Shortness of breath during exercise (not an asthma attack)
* Extreme fatigue after exercise

Of course, your child may not be on drugs, but this could be from them trying to push their bodies too hard. There are a lot of expectations to live up to as a high school quarterback. There are just as many expectations for those in cheerleading or gymnastics. You need to talk to your child and allow them to know that they can only do their best. If their best means to overexert themselves, then it's time you sat down with your child and a counselor to talk out the emotions that they must be going through.
